The Pit – Albuquerque, NM –
The New Mexico Lobos and Wyoming Cowboys have met a total of 154 times in the past – The highest number of meetings among opponents in New Mexico program history, per Sports Reference (Side note: New Mexico has faced in-state rival New Mexico State a total of 146 times). The 155th edition of this match-up – And the lone regular-season match-up of the 2025-26 season – took place on Saturday evening, in front of a rowdy Pit crowd of 13,000+.
There’s something about the Wyoming Cowboys basketball team that seemingly thrives in big-time environments. Led by Sundance Wicks, Wyoming often gives Mountain West opponents all that they can handle – Regardless of positioning in preseason polls, metrics, and the like. Behind star players Nas Meyer and Leland Walker, Wyoming did just that, storming to an early lead off of turnovers and tough buckets. The Cowboys controlled the majority of the first half, until (at about the 2-minute mark) the Lobos countered with a late 10-0 run, taking a narrow 34-31 lead into the break.
Then… The Pit came to life in the 2nd half. New Mexico opened with a series of Jake Hall threes (Three threes, to be exact – Try to say that ten times fast). The Lobos never looked back.
Wyoming had no answers for Lobo big man, Tomislav Buljan. Buljan – Aptly nicknamed the Croatian Sensation by fans and media alike – had an explosive night, posting 25 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and a number of crowd-fueling dunks. Lobos Uriah Tenette (14 points) and Luke Haupt (10 points) also had big nights. In one sequence, shortly after a Haupt three, The Pit erupted on a subsequent Haupt steal and lay-in to score. New Mexico continued to widen the gap, ultimately sealing the victory (78-58).
For Wyoming, Leland Walker and Nas Meyer combined for 23 points, leading the Cowboys in scoring. The Cowboys made 21 of 53 attempted field goals (39%), including 7 of 28 three-point attempts (25%). With the loss, Wyoming drops to 10-4 on the season (1-2 in Mountain West play).
With the win, New Mexico now leads the all-time series with Wyoming, 83-72. The win also marks the 20th-straight victory for the Lobos in The Pit (including the 2024-25 season).
Couch Potato Sports Player of the Game: Tomislav Buljan (Forward, Fr.) – 25 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks
Next Up: The Lobos improve to 11-3 on the season (2-1 in the Mountain West Conference), and will spend next week on the road in Colorado: They’ll play Colorado State (10-4, 1-2 MWC) on Tuesday evening, with tip-time set at 7 p.m. (Mountain West Network).
