Carlsbad, New Mexico- Before the 2025 outdoor track and field season kicks off in New Mexico, we wanted to highlight a couple of athletes each week to build on the already strong community that we have, here in the Land of Enchantment.

Next, in our new series, we spotlighted Carlsbad jumper and thrower, Marley Munoz, a junior looking to make big leap this year. Munoz is also the starting quarterback for the Cavemen football team. Here are the questions we asked him…

Q: What events do you compete in?

A: I compete in high jump, triple jump, and javelin.

Q: What got you involved in track & field?

A: The main reason I got into track was because I wanted to stay in shape after the past football season, and i really just fell in love with the friendly competition.

Q: Any favorite memories during your high school career?

A: The one favorite memory I have during high school track was my freshman year when me and my friends freestyle rapped on our way home from a track meet at like 11 at night.

Q: Do you have a ritual or routine before you compete?

A: I have one ritual before I compete, and that is to pray because I know that God will keep me from injuring myself, and will keep me as healthy as possible.

Q: What are some of your goals for this upcoming season?

A: My main goal for this track meet was to qualify and to compete at state. Now, that I’ve qualified, my main goal is getting better in every aspect for track, and for football this upcoming season.

Q: What is a necessity for you at a meet? AirPods, a certain snack, anything like that?

A: I have two things that i really need during a track meet; one is my airpods, and the other one is sunscreen because I just gotta be ready for Summer.

Q: What are some of your go-to songs to get you in the right headspace for a meet?

A: The main songs I listen to before a track meet are “Don’t think they know” by Chris Brown, and the other song is “Sweet lady” by Tyrese because i just need to be in a calm headspace.

Q: Besides track & field, what are some things you enjoy?

A: The main things I love other than track is football, and just being around my friends.

Q: After a meet, how do you celebrate? Sleep, go to your favorite restaurant, what do you do?

A: The one and only way i celebrate after a meet is sleep for a long time like from whenever i get home to around 12 in the afternoon

Q: What can people expect from your team this season?

A: The state really needs to be ready for Carlsbad because we have so much hidden talent on this team, it is insane.
