Albuquerque, New Mexico- The UNM Lobos (1-0) were out and ready to make a statement in the season opener against Central Michigan University at University Stadium Sept. 5 picking up a 38-7 victory.
The crowd was loud and put up a huge attendance of 24,126 which is the best attendance for a UNM home opener since 2014.
However, Coach Eck voiced some displeasure with the turnout, “I’d say this, I think this is going to be the best football team since further than that [2014 team]. So, I expect better. I think these guys deserve better than that.” Eck said.
The offense ran three quarterbacks: Luke Moga being the primary passer, Toa Fa’avea using his legs for quick yards, and James Laubstein running it down the middle; all stood out and had a great game.
The offense was super productive on the ground: Laubstein had two rush touchdowns, and running back Scottre Humphrey had a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Humphrey also scored a two-point conversion.
The final touchdwon came when Moga connected with receiver Bailen George for an 11-yard receiving touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
Defensively, the Lobos were nearly perfect, and almost logged a shut out.
Spence Nowinsky’s defense did not allow a single point until the 4th quarter, and limited Central Michigan to 30 passing yeards.
“I thought we did a really good job. We wanted to stop the run. Make the quarterbacks beat us with their arms and not with their feet. And I think for the most part, we did a pretty good job of that.” Eck stated.
Central Michigan scored their first and only touchdown of the game with four minutes left to go in the game. Receievr Nasir Williams took the rock into the endzone for 23-yard touchdown.
Next week, UNM Lobos take on the Mercyhurst Lakers at home Sept. 12, who currently are 0-2. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
