Forgotten Saturdays: DonTrell Moore, RB, New Mexico (2002–2005)
Bryan’s take:
DonTrell Moore is one of the best college running backs I’ve ever seen. A hometown hero from Roswell, New Mexico, Moore’s talent made him a legend in Lobo lore.
At Roswell High School, Moore helped lead his team to the 2000 New Mexico state championship, earned a spot on the 2000 Parade All-America Team, and rushed for over 6,500 yards in his prep career.
Moore burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2002, rushing for 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns. His production earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors (2002). In 2003, he put up 1,450 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns including five TDs in a single game vs. Wyoming. In 2004, Moore rushed for 1,091 yards and five rushing TDs, keeping his streak of 1,000+ yard seasons alive. He capped his career in 2005 with 1,298 yards on the ground and 14 rushing touchdowns, earning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year honors and becoming just the sixth FBS player to rush for 1,000+ yards in all four seasons.
His career totals remain staggering: 4,973 rushing yards and 51 rushing touchdowns. He is the only player in school history with four-time team MVPs and four-time First-Team All-Mountain West honors.
In 2006, Roswell declared “DonTrell Moore Day,” and in 2021, he was inducted into the New Mexico Ring of Honor—just the sixth football player to receive that honor. A true Forgotten Saturday — Roswell’s own who became the heartbeat of Lobo football.
